I’m a New Hampshire-based, self-taught abstract painter and my medium is acrylic on canvas and linen. Ideas for both my portrait and abstract paintings are triggered by many things: Literature or magazine articles I’ve read as well as pop culture, music, people, animals, and nature (in other words, LIFE and the world around us). As well, I use painting as a way to reflect and intertwine a wide spectrum of emotions linked to my own life experiences of the past, the present and the future -- and the anticipation of what might be waiting down the road in the future.
While growing up in New Hampshire, I was surrounded by my French grandmother’s still life and abstract oil paintings which showcased rich use of color and movement. Their style left an indelible impression on me and they serve as one of many influences (along with Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell, Jackson Pollock and Henri Matisse to name just a few) that surface in my work which is distinguished by uninhibited use of colors, texture and brush strokes to express both a sense of movement and a still target for contemplation.
For the most part, I’m an intuitive painter and each blank canvas is a new journey for me to take but I often don’t know where I’ll end up until I’ve arrived. My objective with my paintings is to pull the viewer close so they experience life in the painting and subsequently embark on a journey of their own.
